Trees and Dreams

But let this be an encouragement to you. Your bark will be ripped off, your

dream of growing

dream, then grow branches may break and fall away, but if you believe and you pursue this dream with every ounce of your being, oh, how grand it will be! When times are easy, do not become prideful! Do not relax or lose your passion, but take the good times to strengthen your dream, for bad times will approach and try to conquer it. …… (Mike Pigliavento)

Dreams are like trees. They start with a seed, small, the size of the buttons on a young girls favorite pink blouse. They are placed deep within the ground and like small treasures they are covered softly with crumbling dirt, concealed beneath a cold blanket of mulch.

Oh how you long to taste the fruit that this seed will someday bear, but you can’t. Not quite yet. The torment it brings you to know you are just out of reach of what you long for, but peace comes when you realize that it just needs some time, just some time, and so you wait. But as you wait you must not forget it! That seed remains hidden but it must stay on the forefront of your mind. You must make sure it is watered; you must make sure it is protected; it must stay shaded in the summer; it must stay warm in the winter. Slowly but oh so surely that seed breaks! A hint of green emerges and it winds its way up through the dirt and the soil, past the worms and the grubs until it breaks forth from its burial into the air!

The world seems so big and the sapling seems so small, but as the sun shines down and the rain nourishes its roots this sapling thickens and shoots higher and higher into its new surroundings. It branches out and explores the immense openness that surrounds it, like arms stretching wide after a long nap. It makes a name for itself. It is no longer a seed or a sapling, but a tree! It finally has its place in the world, a patch of ground to call its own. Its days as a seed drift out of its memory. It becomes prideful. The winds begin to blow. Thrashing rain falls and turns into damaging sleet and hail. All around it the other trees begin to cry out; deep moans escape from the furthest reaches of their trunks. The wind snaps a branch and the tree cries out. The hail rips off the fresh bark and the tree bleeds white sap. What happened to its strength? Where is its pride?

Terrible creatures emerge from the shadows covered in feathers and armed with sharp talons and terrible beaks. They cling to the tree; they try to break it down. Their beaks rip into the soft wood searching for a place to reside or a bite to eat. But what will they eat?

Suddenly the tree begins to feel little ants crawling within it. Burrowing the very heart of the tree, testing its limits, hollowing it, making it feel empty and hopeless. Why? Why is this happening? The pounding of the wind, the sharpness of the hail, the screeching of the birds, and the gnawing of the ants! Just as soon as it started, it stops. There is silence.

There the tree stands: tattered and torn, branches ripped to shreds and shaved bald of their leaves, but the tree goes on! It repairs itself, it covers its wounds and new bark emerges, new leaves spring up.

Then something new happens. Colorful lumps appear on the newly fortified branches, ever so slowly extending off the limbs like tear drops. Fruit. Sweet juicy fruit for the planter to finally enjoy! It may have been a difficult process, and there may have been times when the tree wanted to give up! The planter may have lost hope in the tree, but in the end the tree prevailed, and in the end the tree remained strong!

Dreams are like trees. They may start small and they may stay hidden at first. But if you remain passionate about these dreams they will break free, starting small, concealed in hard shells, then breaking forth. You must make sure that even before this new life becomes visible you do not forget your dreams. Do so, and they will forget you. It is up to you to place one foot in front of another towards your goals. The journey to fulfill these will not always be easy. Sometimes it will hurt. Sometimes it will feel like you are wasting your time. You may say, “What good is my dream? Everyone dreams, so what!

Dreams do not come true in this harsh world!”

But let this be an encouragement to you. Your bark will be ripped off, your branches may break and fall away, but if you believe and you pursue this dream with every ounce of your being, oh, how grand it will be! When times are easy, do not become prideful! Do not relax or loosen your passion, but take the good times to strengthen your dream, for bad times will approach and try to conquer it. People will call you foolish and slander your hopes for yourself. Let them talk! It is your dream!

Remain humble and remember how your dream began. It was just an innocent seed, and deep within your ever-growing dream that seed remains the heart of your pursuit. Finally, after working so hard and giving your all, your dreams will come true! They will flourish like a tree and, like the best trees, will bear fruit so that all can partake in your dream-come-true. As others celebrate with you and have a taste of your success they can take the seeds from the fresh fruit and plant their own dreams within their hearts. And so I say to you today, “Dream on!”
